WJXT News4Jax

Pop-pop-pop the radial engines of a B-17 bomber start up as we board the plane with a World War 2 veteran, my camera shutter fires away. For some this would be a once in a lifetime experience, for me this was just another day as an intern at WJXT News4Jax. I followed reporters into the field covering car chases, shootings, court dealings, a JEA scandal, local government, and human interest stories. I helped the investigative department (the I-Team) sift through depositions, financial documents, and the deep depths of the internet covering the JEA scandal that rocked the city of Jacksonville. A shipwreck was found off the coast of St. Augustine, I wrote the web story that accompanied the TV package. A 12-year-old leukemia survivor met the bone marrow donor that saved his life, I used AP Newswire to write the story and chose the clips to accompany that segment. At the funeral for Jacksonville’s former mayor Jake Godbold, I took photos and interviews of the people the news crews weren’t looking at. Those photos were published to the News4Jax website. After that the web team had me running to get more photos, the entire Gate River Run to be exact! As steam rose through a shattered window where firefighters had just extinguished a fire, I took b-roll of the scene to send in to the morning show producers.

As an intern I had no real responsibilities, it was up to me to be a go-getter and find ways to contribute as well as expand my knowledge of the broadcast news industry. I filmed stand-ups every chance I got, to fine tune my on camera presence. I constantly took critiques from the reporters and photographers I was with. I was even tasked with independent photo assignments for the web team. When the opportunity arose for me to do something new, I would pounce on it every time.

I was approached by the web team to take behind the scenes photos of the Gate River Run. I biked the entire course with my dslr, documenting the personalities I saw along the way. My photos can be viewed in the slideshow.

I took portraits of attendees at the funeral for former Jacksonville mayor Jake Godbold. My photos can be seen in the slideshow.

I adapted this story from Ashley Harding's TV script. I added details from press releases, and background information found on the internet.
